Designing Experiences
An app is not the solution to a user’s problem. It’s just a tool, that should be as simple, smart, and supportive, as a good friend or mentor.
The solution to satisfying human-machine interactions lies not in pretty interfaces, but in thoughtful end-to-end experiences that might not require interfaces at all.
After having worked as Senior UI designer, User Researcher, and Design Hub Lead, I nowadays mainly review UIs from third-party providers, to make sure they stay on brand. You can find some of my more recent UI-concepts in the Branding Spaces section, where I also took over the entire front-end development. Most customer projects, however, underlie non-disclosure agreements.
Internet of Things' Design Hub Lead
In 2015-2016 I lead a global team of 12 designers for SAP’s first Internet of Things applications, such as the Asset Intelligence Network or Predictive Maintenance and Services.
My job was to ensure consistency across applications, and the development and reprioritization of new controls as additions to the overall SAP Fiori UI Design Language. Prior to that, I helped to define the basics components, concepts, and interactions, for which SAP received a red dot design award.

“On behalf of the Internet of Things team I want to thank you for your enthusiasm and the great collaboration on the ‘Internet of Things vision app’. You are a role model for design leadership and entrepreneurial thinking. I am looking forward to working together with you on many more projects.Sincerely, Daniel”
SAP Presales Innovation Lab Nordic
I worked both, on the global design concepts, as well as designing custom solutions for clients like Ikea, Maersk, Yara, Siemens, Den Norske Opera & Ballet, Nokia, Trygfonden, Thürmer, Bane Danmark, Handelsbanken, Novozymes, and others.
Besides conducting on-site and remote user research, preparing and moderating design thinking workshops with clients and end-users, and creating interactive UI mockups, I usually also prepared marketing material such as videos, animations, brochures, and custom websites to make it easier for our customers and sales teams.
“Always collaborating closely with the customer and the team to secure user-centric design. Thomas adopts to new approaches and tools to enhance experience and growing awareness of the possible. In doing that, Thomas has been a catalysator of developing the team – from prototyping, technology to brand guidelines.”
User Research
A fundamental precondition for creating great end-user experiences is understanding their goals, contexts, and processes. While nothing beats on-site research in terms of information density, there are situations where this is not feasible. I have developed own user research tools to extract information, but also use conventional questionnaires and workshops. You usually find me asking to meet the end-user (not the IT admin, not the procurement manager) as soon as you assign me a new project.
